Welcome from Dean Paul Koch

Welcome to the website for UCSC's Coastal Science Campus. I hope you explore the site to learn more about the Coastal Biology Building project, as well as the other programs and research taking place on the site.

Programs in the Physical and Biological Sciences at UC Santa Cruz include unique research and internship opportunities, and intensive field studies. The Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (EEB) department is devoted to the study of ecological and evolutionary processes in marine, terrestrial and freshwater environments. Biologists at UCSC have played and will continue to play an important part in these advances, and the campus programs offer unique educational opportunities in biology that feature small class sizes and extensive faculty-student interactions.

The Coastal Biology Building will be the future home of EEB and will provide state of the art classroom and lab facilities for undergraduates, graduates, researchers and faculty focused on the study of biology, marine sciences, ecology and evolution, and plant sciences. The Coastal Biology Building will:

  • Allow the delivery of unique, essential hands-on research experiences for students and foster interdisciplinary exploration, learning and discovery;
  • Maximize opportunities for marine-dependent and coastal-related field-based research and instruction, enhancing UCSC’s preeminence in these areas;
  • Co-locate and consolidate EEB students, faculty, staff, researchers, facilities, and affiliates at the Coastal Science Campus (CSC), greatly improving access to resources currently split between the main campus and CSC;
  • Provide meeting spaces that will facilitate interaction among faculty and students, and increase opportunities for students to collaborate with adjacent State and Federal scientific and marine agencies, and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs);
  • Create additional critical laboratory support facilities

We are excited about the project and the positive impacts it will have on research and instruction alike!
